    Homework Nail Penetration/Ruler Fractions #3

    Hello Mr Lewis,
    I have a few questions where the board is smaller than the nail. Am I reading this wrong (or doing the math wrong?) or should I be putting a number for the amount the nail is going through the board?
    For example question 3:

    5 penny nail penetrate a 1 1/4″ green beam

    5d = 1 3/4″
    1 1/4″ Nominal beam = 1 1/32 green

    So I get the common denominator and when I do the math:

    1 1/32″ Beam
    – 1 24/32″ Nail

    I can convert the beam to 0 33/32 but the nail is longer than the depth of the board. What am I messing up here?

    Thank you!

    Remember, always put the bigger number on top:

    Gotcha thanks. So it doesn’t matter if the nail is longer than the boards thickness, larger number on top. Thanks

    Technically, yes it does matter. But we’re not dealing with negative numbers in this class, so always put the bigger number on top in a takeaway.
